Making IT Infrastructure Available: A Stand Alone E-learning Solution for Tansen Municipality

In September 2013, CITYNET will kick off a project in Tansen, Nepal that will provide an opportunity to students of two public schools to access internet and information technology.

The “Making IT Infrastructure Available to Peripheral Urban Areas as a Means of Enhancing Learning and Facilitating Development: A Stand Alone, Low Cost and Low Power E-learning Solution for Tansen Municipality” will upgrade the learning facilities in Shree Saraswoti Secondary School and Shree Laxmi Higher Secondary School by providing them with an IT solution that will make access to offline learning materials possible.

This project will provide:

  • Raspberry Pi Computers
  • Linux Operating System
  • Low-Cost Tablet Computers
  • Low-Power LCD Monitors

The setup for a single school will consist of one to two servers as well as a number of tablets. The exact number and type of tablet will be largely based on available funding and the evaluation of specific user needs in the early stages of the project.

The project will use the e-learning content developed by OLE Nepal (Open Learning Exchange Nepal). OLE Nepal has developed E-Pustakalaya, an education-focused digital library containing full-text documents, books, images, videos, audio files, and interactive educational software. This content is available over the internet, but for schools without internet connection as in the case of the two public schools, the content can also be accessed from a local server.
