CityNet Publishes a Compilation of Urban Practitioners' Views on Asian Perspectives on Sustainable Urbanization


CityNet launched a special edition of its bi-annual magazine, CityVoices, focusing on the Practitioners' Views of Asian Perspectives on Sustainable Urbanization. Twenty-four urban practitioners demonstrate that every challenge can potentially lead to locally customized solutions, which can then serve as useful case studies for other cities.

An Outcome Document of the International Forum on Urban Policy for the SDGs
As a result of the first International Forum of Urban Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) jointly organised by Seoul Metropolitan Government, UNESCAP and CityNet from June 8th-10th, the three organisations issued an outcome document as a commitment to fully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  More>>


CityNet, SMG and UNESCAP to create Urban SDG Knowledge Sharing Platform
CityNet, Seoul Metropolitan Government and UNESCAP continue their collaboration to create an Urban SDG Knowledge Sharing Platform that was introduced during the International Forum on Urban Policy for the SDGs in Seoul. It will serve as an online hub for cities across the Asia Pacific region and beyond to share experiences and best practices in response to the SDGs.

Join the 31st KLRTC Workshop on Public Spaces: Creating Safe, Inclusive, and Accessible Public Spaces for All from August 2nd - 4th in Kuala Lumpur, jointly organised by CityNet, UN-Habitat and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. This interactive workshop will inform city leaders the importance of public spaces and why should they ensure quality public spaces in their cities for healthy urban life and sustainable urban development.

In partnership with UN Habitat, CityNet is organising a side event at the upcoming Preparatory Committee Meeting III (PrepCom 3) on July 25-27 in Surabaya focusing on "Civic and Youth Participation in the Wired Age". Speakers from Sidoarjo Regency, Microsoft, Mojang, Pulse Lab, and Grab Taxi will share their perspectives on the topic. Future of Cities - Our Next Generation's Expectations
What do young Citizens expect of their Governments? City Mayors are invited to a session organized by CityNet and Microsoft as part of the co-located events at World Cities Summit on July 11th in Singapore to discuss the outcomes of a recent survey of young people's expectations of their City Governments. Interesting insights emerge include current views of the challenges faced today, young peoples' hope for the future and Cities that they admire.  More>>

Localised Workshop on Cities and Climate Change
Following last year's localised Cities and Climate Change Workshop focusing of Flood Management in Banda Aceh, CityNet organised a workshop on Cities and Climate Change in Jakarta targeting member cities in Indonesia on May 31st in collaboration with the Research Center for Climate Change of University of Indonesia. This workshop has also become a platform to introduce the climate leadership programme.

CityNet Session at IGLUS Executive Master Program
A session on Different Ways of Smart Governance in Asian Urban System was delivered by CityNet as part of Seoul Module at the Executive Master in Innovative Governance of Large Urban Systems (IGLUS) on June 11th. In addition to the discussion on the differences and similarities of smart cities in Asia, CityNet invited two guest speakers from its member cities, Yokohama and Makati to share their perspectives on what smart city means.   More>>
MoU between CityNet and Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters
To facilitate cooperation in Life Safety and Fire Services Trainings and Safety Management Vehicle and Appliance Support Programs, CityNet signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters. This MOU represents a formalized agreement to partner and leverage each other's resources towards building safer cities in Asia.  
Life Saving and Fire Services training for Philippines cities
Following the MoU signing between CityNet and Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters, a training on the Life Saving and Fire Services was held from June 13th-17th for CityNet members and partners in Philippines. The course provided a valuable opportunity for both Seoul and Filipino cities to exchange know-how and experience regarding firefighting and emergency management.  

CityNet Presents at the 7th ASEAN ROK Transport Cooperation Forum
Represented by Director of Programs Youngmin Chang, CityNet Secretariat presented the network's current situation and plan of international cooperation in the ASEAN Countries particularly in the transport sector at the 7th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Transport Cooperation Forum from June 1st-3rd in Seoul. This forum was co-organized by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and aimed to construct a sustainable, smart, and efficient urban transport system for every citizen of Asia-Pacific cities through convergence strategies.  
World Bank's Open Learning Campus
On June 24 the World Bank Group (WBG) launched the Open Learning Campus (OLC) in Korea. The OLC is the WBG's single destination for staff and client learning supported by the Korea-LLI Global Program on Knowledge Sharing (KGKS), financed by Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Republic of Korea. It serves as a learning ecosystem that is open, interactive and networked. It leverages the vast knowledge of the World Bank Group and its partners and converts it into actionable learning for effective development.

66th United Nations Department of Public Information Conference
CityNet representatives participated in the 66th UN DPI Conference in Gyeongju, South Korea. This annual conference is the biggest gathering of non-government organizations duly recognized by the United Nations. This year's theme is titled, 'Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together', which is anchored on the Sustainable Development Goal 4 targeting Inclusive and Equitable Education and Promotion of Lifelong Learning Opportunities.  

Two New Interns Join CityNet Secretariat This Summer
Ms. Jiyoung Jo and Mr. Jae Hyun Park are CityNet Secretariat's interns this summer. Ms. Jo is pursuing her B.A. in Metropolitan Studies and Environmental Studies at New York University. Prior to joining CityNet she was an intern with NYC Department of Transportation and Landmarks Preservation Commission. Mr. Park is from Toronto and graduated with a master's degree in Conflict Studies at the London School of Economics. Prior to joining CityNet, he worked with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Myanmar.

Invitation to the 9th CityNet Disaster Cluster Seminar and Symposium
The 9th CityNet Disaster Cluster Seminar and Symposium will be hosted by and taking place in Taipei on September 22nd -24th. Invitations were sent mid-June to CityNet Disaster Cluster members and is extended to members' officers in charge of Disaster Risk Reduction Management to join for a knowledge exchange and networking opportunity.  
Sharing Yokohama's Practices on Addressing Urban Ageing Population
Mr. Naoki Otomo, Director of Housing Department, Housing Reusing Division of Architecture Bureau of Yokohama City shared Yokohama's approach towards ageing population through housing programs at the International Forum on Urban Policy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on 8th June in Seoul. Mr. Naoki Otomo presented on "Building sustainable residential area models".   More>>
Meeting of the Committee on Disaster Response in Iloilo, Philippines
On May 23rd the Committee on Disaster Response headed by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) initiated a meeting of its member offices. The discussion was centered on issues affecting service delivery response efficiency during a disaster, the use of the Quick Response Fund, and cooperation among service providers.

Study Visit to Municipal Waste Resource Facilities
As a part of staff training, CityNet Yokohama Project Office staffs, along with two interns, were invited to pay a site visit to the local Resources and Waste Recycling Bureau Facilities on June 3rd. The staff went on site tours of the Midori Recycling Separation Facilities, and the Tsuzuki Incineration Plant and Plastic Containers/Packaging Stockyard.  
First Batch of Barangays Conduct the Community Based Risk Assessment in Iloilo
On May 16-20, Iloilo City's pool of Participatory Capacity and Vulnerability Assessment (PCVA) facilitators conducted the community based risk assessment to 15 barangays. The outputs include hazard, vulnerability, and resource maps; timelines of disaster occurrences, inventories of DRRM service organizations, and health data; as well as climate and disaster patterns in the barangay.   More>>
CYO Welcomes a New Intern
Starting June 2016, CityNet Yokohama Project Office welcomes a new intern to support the office activities. Ms. Tabatha Donley will be joining CYO for the following month. She is pursuing her B.A. in Global Affairs, with minors in Conflict Resolution/Analysis and Social Justice, at George Mason University in Northern Virginia (USA).
