for this year's Executive Committee Meeting
 


CityNet is pleased to announce the 34th Session of the Executive Committee Meeting that will take place
from November 23rd-24th, 2016 in Makati, Philippines. The Executive Committee is the highest governing body of CityNet that holds annual meeting to discuss the Network's direction and strategy. The Secretariat will hold one day of Strategic Planning Meeting on November 23rd to strategize CityNet activities. Further details will be announced when it becomes available. CityNet calls for articles for the upcoming CityVoices
 
 

CityNet Secretariat calls its member cities and associate members to contribute an article for the upcoming CityVoices, the network's bi-annual magazine. Share your city's successful projects and best practices in finding the best solutions to the urban challenges that will be beneficial knowledge for all CityNet members. The 3rd Mayoral Forum on Human Mobility, Migration and Development
 
 

On September 29th-30th, 2016, the Third Mayoral Forum entitled "Governing Locally: City Leadership at the Front and Center in Implementing Migration Policy - Promoting Development and Securing Protection" will take place in Quezon City Philippines. It will focus on the role of diaspora in contributing to development in communities of origin and destination, and securing access to services and protections for vulnerable migrants and refugees in urban settings.

CityNet contributes to PrepCom 3 
 

CityNet organised a session on Civic and Youth Participation in the Wired Age on 27 July as part of Prepcom 3 side event in Surabaya, Indonesia. The session discussed projects and initiatives that are aiming to create sustainable cities through stakeholder engagement, education and raise environmental awareness by the use of smart technologies. The session concluded with points of recommendation for Habitat III's New Urban Agenda.

Future Cities co-located event with Microsoft
 

As part of the World Cities Summit side event in Singapore, CityNet and Microsoft held a Mayor Dialogue on 11th July to discuss about the young peoples' hope for the future and cities that they admire. This discussion was based on the outcomes of a recent survey of young people's expectations of their city governments conducted by Microsoft.

CityNet moderates a C40 High Level Forum session
 

CityNet Special Advisor Mary Jane Ortega moderated one of C40 High Level Forum sessions, under the theme: Why working together is key: Inclusive cities with engaged partners towards a climate safe future. The session highlighted key approaches from each city in engaging various stakeholders – business and private sector, communities and citizens – in moving forward with climate action priorities and programmes.

Life Saving and Fire Services training for Thailand cities

Following the MoU signing between CityNet and Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters and the previous training on the Life Saving and Fire Services for Philippines cities in June, the second round of similar training was held from 26th June -2nd July for cities in Thailand. The course provided a valuable opportunity to exchange know-how and experience regarding firefighting and emergency management.

CityNet at the Regional Workshop on Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities

CityNet participated in the 6th Regional Workshop on Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: The Urban Nexus on June 22-23, 2016 in Sta. Rosa City, Philippines. The session was organized by ICLEI in partnership with GIZ, UNESCAP and the City Government of Santa Rosa. More than 130 local and international delegates attended the event.

Taking Asian experience on safer cities to Habitat III

CityNet is taking the experience of Asian cities on safety to the Habitat III outcome documents. On June 21st-24th and July 6th-8th, the coordinator of CityNet´s Safer Cities Program, Sayel Cortes talked from the perspective of Asia Pacific cities at the regional and global meetings on Safer Cities organized by UN-Habitat and UNODC.

Article of the Urban SDG Knowledge Platform

As part of the continued collaboration between CityNet, Seoul Metropolitan Government and UNESCAP an online urban SDG knowledge sharing platform will be established. This platform will serve as an online hub for cities across the Asia Pacific region and beyond to share experiences and best practices in response to the SDGs. CityNet Program Officer Sayel Cortes shared the gist of the project with Citiscope.

Researcher visits CityNet to learn about city networks

Researcher from the International Relations and International Organization Department of the University of Groningen, Ms. Annisa Paramita Wiharani visited CityNet Secretariat for three weeks to conduct a field work, consisting of in-depth interviews, direct observation and learning from policy documents. It is part of a broader research project on the significance of cities and city networks for the global environmental governance (GEG) that analyses various city networks that have emerged as potentially strategic actors for GEG. 

Clean Air Asia's Guidance Framework for Better Air Quality in Asian Cities

Clean Air Asia's pioneering Guidance Framework for Better Air Quality in Asian Cities, launched in February, is empowering cities and countries to resolve the air pollution challenges that are so prevalent throughout the region. It provides roadmaps that facilitate the assessment of a city's and/or country's level of development in six areas and identifies the priority measures that need to be undertaken to address the key issues.

The 7th ASEAN-ROK Transport Cooperation Forum

The 7th ASEAN-Republic Of Korea Transport Cooperation Forum was held on June 1st- 3rd in Seoul. It was hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) and ASEAN. CityNet Director of Programs Youngmin Chang presented "CityNet's Current Situation and Plan of International Cooperation in ASEAN Countries". Grant awardees announced for Community Based Solid Waste Management Project
 
 

CITYNET Yokohama Project Office announced the final result of the call for project proposals on Community Based Solid Waste Management made in May 2016: HELP-O (Galle) and PIEDAR (Islamabad), both associate members of CityNet. Each organisation will be awarded $10,000 USD to conduct activities outlined in their proposal and will allocate counterpart funding.

Yokohama starts training in Kathmandu on Structural and Seismic Engineering
 
 

The series of trainings on Structural and Seismic Engineering started off earlier this year between Yokohama and Kathmandu where the first batch of engineers were invited to Yokohama for exploring how seismic retrofitting and countermeasures for earthquakes have been taken into account while doing city planning.

ICDDRMC-Secretariat capacity building for disaster response operations

As part of Component 3's activities in the CBARAD-II Project, members of the ICDDRMC-Secretariat organized a workshop and multiple meetings to define their roles in accordance with the mandates of the CDRRMC. The discussions lead to the implementation of weekly meetings and the adoption of a new name, "SecDAT" (Secretariat Disaster Augmentation Team).

 JBLFM University to host the DRR Information and Exhibit Center

In cooperation with Component 1 of the CBARAD-II Project, The Art Deck Building of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) in Iloilo will become the host of the DRR Information and Exhibit Center. Component 2's collaboration between PWDs, the city government, and academe have pursued the development of inclusive DRR information.

Child centred DRR workshop and the launch of the Conference in Advancing CCDRR

CityNet Youth Japan meet with CYO Interns for culture exchange presentations

On June 22nd CITYNET Youth Japan (CYJ) and interns, Tabatha Donely and Sophia Mayen from CYO met for a cultural exchange. The presentations focused on cultural differences between Japan, Canada, and the USA. Topics discussed revolved around education systems, social and societal differences, college life, and first impressions on each country.

CYO welcomes a staff member 

Starting July 2016, CITYNET Yokohama Project Office welcomes back a staff member to support our office activities. Ms. Nicola Craig Hora is an undergraduate student from the University of Victoria who was an intern with CYO in 2015. Until March 2017, she will be continuing her work on the CBARAD-II Project and helping the office with their various projects and activities.
