As we welcome the beginning of 2018, CityNet Secretariat has prepared a series of activities that will be conducted throughout the year. We look forward to the active participation of all members and partners for the success of each activity. The list of activities are among the outcomes of the 2017 CityNet Congress that was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka that built to the four-year Medium Term Plan activities. Congratulations to Dato’ Maimunah Mohd Sharif: the new UN-Habitat Executive Director

CityNet congratulates Dato’ Maimunah Mohd Sharif for the new appointment as the Executive Director of the UN-Habitat. Dato’ Maimunah is the former Mayor of Municipal Council of Penang Island, one of CityNet Executive Committee members. CityNet will ensure continuing support and cooperation with UN-Habitat, and we look forward to the exciting engagements between the two organisations.

Unlocking the Potential of Local Leadership for Sustainable Urban Development

In collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, CityNet will organise a high-level forum on urban solutions to implement the New Urban Agenda at the upcoming 9th World Urban Forum to be held in Kuala Lumpur, at 11:00-13:00 as part of the Listen to Cities Room. The discussion will focus on the role of cities in the implementation of NUA and the SDGs while at the same time sharing experiences in localising the SDGs. Panelist will include high level representative from CityNet, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Jakarta, Cities Development Initiatives Asia, C40, and Seoul Metropolitan Government. How do I implement the Global Agenda in my city?

CDIA is co-organising a training with CityNet, GIZ, UNESCAP, UCLG-ASPAC, and ICLEI to raise awareness about the overall importance of cities / local governments in the implementation of the global agendas,about challenges, opportunities, examples and concrete entry points for action. This interactive and practice-oriented training will be held on Friday, 9 February from 11:00-14:00 in room 407 as part of the World Urban Forum 9 in Kuala Lumpur. Improving Urban Planning for Regenerative City Development

What are the challenges and opportunities for One Belt One Road (OBOR) country cities to implement SDGs and New Urban Agenda from city perspective? According to UN statistics, by 2050, more than 3.39 billion people of OBOR countries will be living in cities, with 350 million people moving to cities every year. With the rapid urbanization, the regenerative city development in OBOR countries has great influence on the SDGs implementation globally. CityNet will be presenting at the discussion organised by the World Future Council as part of the World Urban Forum’s networking session on Thursday 8 February, from 9:00-11:00 in room 403 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.

CityNet Secondment staff call for applications

CityNet Secretariat will now accept nominations/applications the Secondment Staff Programme, for the period of 2 May 2018 to 30 April 2019. CityNet Secondment Staff is expected to join the Secretariat as one of the key personnel in the Secretariat to actively promote CityNet’s activities for the benefit of members. We are seeking to welcome a dynamic person who has a positive attitude, good computer skills and is able to communicate well in English.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Acceleration for Climate Change Mitigation

Renewable energy is one of the effective tools we have in the fight against climate change. However, several challenges often impede cities to focus on this. Jakarta in collaboration with CityNet organised a workshop on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Acceleration for Climate Change Mitigation on 15 December 2017 to help address this concern.

2017 CityNet Congress video coverage

CityNet Congress has been successfully delivered in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 5-8 November with participation of over 300 guests from around the world. It also marked the 30th anniversary of the network. CityNet has now started to focus on implementing the plans and key decisions laid out during the Congress. 2018 Smart City Summit & Expo in Taipei City

This year’s 2018 Smart City Summit and Expo (SCSE) will take place on March 27 to 30, 2018. Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) is jointly organized by Taipei Computer Association, Taipei City Government, and industry partners with an aim to present the one-stop IoT solutions tailored to the needs of the markets. Your city is invited to join this event, and to share your smart solutions by contributing the Solution Description by 28 February 2018 that will be published in conjunction to the COP24.

CityNet Yokohama Project Office

Soft-launching of Makati DRRM Academy

CityNet Yokohama Project Office and Plus Arts joined Makati City Government to ceremoniously launch the Makati DRRM Academy office located within the University of Makati.

This is a part of the long-term plan of Makati to establish a formal DRRM Academy where technical trainings for professionals and awareness raising on DRR for the general public can be conducted within the same complex.

HELP-O and PIEDAR to present during 22nd CITYNET Japan Forum

CITYNET Yokohama Project Office has been working with HELP-O and PIEDAR on Community Based Solid Waste Management projects in Galle and Islamabad since 2017. While the target groups are different, both projects have introduced various initiatives to raise awareness, reduce, reuse and recycle waste including segregation, profiling waste, and awareness raising activities in the communities and schools. The forum expects to share the details of the project to the public in Yokohama.

Training on Structural and Seismic Engineering

The City of Yokohama will host the 7th training on Structural and Seismic Engineering from March 19-23, 2018. Engineers from Kathmandu Metropolitan City will visit Yokohama to work with experts from the Housing and Architecture Bureau to design the final output of the 3- year training. The training in March will focus on building construction inspection process and developing awareness raising material on construction techniques.
