Excitement is building up as preparations for the second Sustainable Urban Transport in Asia and the Pacific Region workshop are now underway. The event, in partnership with the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) and in conjunction with the 4th International Public Transportation Forum (IPTF), will take place from September 2-5 in Seoul, Korea. During the workshop, participants can look forward to learning about Seoul and Korea's public transport challenges and achievements as well as share and discuss their cities' transport issues. Helping Local Governments Harness Water Management Skills
CITYNET in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government Office of Waterworks (ARISU) will showcase Seoul's water management system in the Seoul Training Program for Water Managers in Southeast Asia from September 8-14, 2013. The course will feature a combination of lectures, discussions and diverse field visits including the Office of Seoul Waterworks, Seoul Waterworks Research Institute, Jungrang Sewage Treatment Center and Arisu Water Purification Center. KLRTC 26: 4th International Conference on Green Purchasing
Everyone will be "seeing Green" during the 4th International Conference on Green Purchasing from September 18-20, 2013 in Subang Jaya, Malaysia organized by the Green Purchasing Network of Malaysia (GPNM). The three-day conference will bring together around 400 participants from national and local governments, businesses, the private sector, academia and international organizations to discuss and exchange knowledge on sustainable green development, purchasing and productivity. KLRTC 27: Integrated Urban Planning in the Asia Pacific
During the Integrated Urban Planning in the Asia Pacific Region workshop from September 23-26, CITYNET will gather city mayors, senior city managers, urban planners, environmental officers, engineers and other key urban leaders and decision makers at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Training Centre (KLRTC). Throughout the workshop, there will be discussions, presentations and working sessions on creative and strategic ways to address contemporary urban challenges. CITYNET Brings ICT Solutions to Public Schools in Nepal
In September 2013, CITYNET will commence a project in Tansen, Nepal that will provide an opportunity to students of two public schools in urban, but yet to be connected communities. These schools will make use of enhanced IT as an aid to learning. The Making IT Infrastructure Available to Peripheral Urban Areas as a Means of Enhancing Learning and Facilitating Development: A Stand Alone, Low Cost and Low Power E-learning Solution for Tansen Municipality is an innovative e-learning solution that will upgrade learning facilities in Shree Saraswoti Secondary School and Shree Laxmi Higher Secondary School by providing them with a range of low-cost, low-maintenance, and scaleable IT tools that will make access to offline learning materials possible. CITYNET Yokohama Project Updates
CYO Leads Team of Experts to Iloilo
As a part of the Community Based Adaptation and Resilience Against Disasters (CBARAD) project a team of experts from the Crisis Management Center and Health and Social Welfare Division of the City of Yokohama visited Iloilo to conduct an assessment and plan activities targeted at local communities. During this weeklong program, the team visited five pilot barangays to assess and understand the actual conditions of the area. Read more.
CYO Signs MOU with Philippine University
To support the CBARAD project and develop future programs, the CITYNET Yokohama Office and the Central Philippine University (CPU) signed a MOU to develop a partnership. This will allow students and faculty members at CPU to learn and share information more efficiently to build a more resilient community. At CPU's Knowledge and Learning Development Center, Plus Arts organized a workshop on training and raising awareness on disaster preparedness. CPU's role in communication, data gathering and the expansion of learning materials will prove to be vital to this project. Read more.
Yokohama to Thimphu: C2C on Solid Waste Management
Fumiko Hayashi, Mayor of Yokohama, announced that two garbage collection trucks will be donated to Thimphu, Bhutan, a member city of CITYNET. "We hope they will be helpful for the residents of Thimphu", said Mayor Hayashi. Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and has nearly 100,000 inhabitants. The city's recent boom in construction projects has been followed by a significant increase in waste disposal. Read more.
City of Yokohama Wins Global Green City Award
This year, the seventh consecutive Global Human Settlements Award, sponsored by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS), was held in June in Berlin, Germany. Among the cities that received the laurel of "Global Green City" was Yokohama, for its continuing efforts in creating an environmentally sustainable, ecological and livable city together with its citizens. GIZ: ADB, GIZ, and EcoMobility Alliance Organize Non-Motorized Transport Workshop
Asian Development Bank (ADB) and GIZ will be co-hosting a Non-Motorized Training (NMT) EcoMobility Alliance workshop at the EcoMobility 2013 Suwon congress. The workshop will begin on September 2nd, the first full day of the Congress and will cover NMT planning principles, infrastructure, promotion, and a street audit of Suwon. GIZ: E-Learning course - Sustainable Urban Mobility in Developing Countries 2013
GIZ, together with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will offer its fourth e-learning course on sustainable urban mobility in developing countries. The course will be delivered between September 16th and December 20th, 2013. The course will enhance the capacity of local urban and transportation planners to formulate and implement appropriate policies that contribute towards transportation sustainability in developing countries. It allows an analysis of transport demand management, improved public and non-motorized transport, environmental protection, road safety, and gender. Read more.
