SUMMARYThe centrality of adequate housing, greater social protection measures for the most vulnerable, more effective urban services and infrastructure including water, transport, energy along with the effective use of technology and digital solutions, and the need to revisit urban planning and sustainable mobility to create greener and liveable cities has been brought to the forefront during the pandemic. Post pandemic, the repercussion of COVID-19 continues with many cities and countries in Asia-Pacific struggling to recover economically, with increasing food, energy, and economic insecurities.

This session will discuss and identify:

  • Status, trends, emerging issues, and interlinkages of implementing sustainable urban development in Asia-Pacific within the context of a sustainable urban recovery from multiple connected crises.
  • Urban policy solutions and instruments to address increasing uncertainty as well as actions to recover and develop sustainable cities and communities in Asia-Pacific by accelerating action among different actors, including through integrated spatial planning, municipal financing instruments, capacity building, urban data, innovation, and smart city technologies in the context of the next flagship report on Asia-Pacific cities and forthcoming 8th Asia-Pacific Urban Forum.

TITLEUrban development cooperation between Asia-Pacific and Europe: Towards sustainable cities

SUMMARYIn Asia-Australasia, 86 cities are working with European pairs to develop action plans and concrete pilot actions on the ground. International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) Asia-Australasia is playing a crucial role in supporting the implementation of Urban Cooperation Action Plans (U-CAPs) with these cities that have formulated 43 pairings to date.

This session would reflect on the first round of exchanges implemented by the IURC cities funded by the European Union. Common challenges and joint solutions in the areas of urban development cooperation, circular economy, nature-based solutions, green mobility, urban food cooperation and smart city would be at the centre of discussions. City leaders and experts would reflect on their experiences and current plans to achieve tangible results for the cities. Interaction with the attendants would be sought through Slido, Mentimeter or other tools.
