CityNet pays a courtesy visit to Penang and Seberang Perai

CityNet representatives had the opportunities to pay a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Penang Island City Council and Mayor of Seberang Perai Municipal Council, Malaysia. Through this visit, CityNet and both city mayors had fruitful discussion as to how both cities could further boost their active contribution to the network as well as receive sufficient support from the Secretariat and the rest of the network.

On behalf of the network, CityNet Deputy Secretary General Aisa Tobing, Deputy Director of Programs Stephani Widorini, and Project Manager Paulie Mora, extended CityNet’s invitation to the Mayor of Penang Dato’ Ar. Yew Tung Seang to attend this year’s Executive Committee (ExCom) Meeting as one of the ExCom members elected in the 2017 CityNet Congress. Given this important role, CityNet believes that Penang will be able to positively contribute to the network.

Dato’ Yew also used this opportunity to ask CityNet to support their upcoming prestigious event the Asia Pacific Urban Forum (APUF) 7- the largest and most diverse multi-stakeholder urban forum in the Asia-Pacific region organized in collaboration with UNESCAP, UN-HABITAT, Urbanice Malaysia and the Government of Malaysia. Thousands of people expected to participate in this event taking place from 15-17 October 2019. One of the highlights is Cycling Mayors, being an avid cyclist himself Dato’ Yew invited all mayors across the region to participate.

In the meeting with the Seberang Perai Mayor, Dato’ Sr. Hj Rozali Mohamud, CityNet representatives thanked him for his continuous support to the network as an active member. He shared many best practices implemented by the city during his leadership including upcycle park and public space provision. He also emphasized that in addition to urban mobility, low carbon society initiative should be one of our priorities, therefore Seberang Perai has strived on renewable energy initiatives by providing incentives for private sector to optimise the renewable energy effort. He extended his invitation to all CityNet members to visit Seberang Perai and benchmark his urban policies in various areas.
