Street lighting is often regarded as a public good, as it is a crucial element of urban infrastructure. It is an important public service that local authorities need to provide to ensure adequate lighting on roads, which leads to enhanced safety and security in the city, apart from improving visibility during evenings and night. The use of energy efficient lamps has great potential to save costs due to reduction in electricity consumption. With new energy efficient lighting technologies, such as LEDs (light-emitting diodes), streetlights represent one of the most cost-effective opportunities for energy savings and for reducing municipalities’ energy costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Urban SDG Knowledge Platform will focus mainly on city policies and initiatives developed in response to the SDGs and climate change in cities, rather than aiming at providing a comprehensive repository for all policies, initiatives and good practices in cities in Asia-Pacific. It will also draw upon and link to existing knowledge platforms. All member cities and organisations are invited to send their inputs on each city’s best practices.
